I visited my friend Chris Robak from Silver Cove, Canada’s largest rock and gem distributor, for one seriously explosive mining adventure!
We took a helicopter to the top of a mountain where a massive 50-tonne boulder loaded with gem-quality Iolite was waiting for us. After the crew spent the previous week drilling 31 holes, we flew in with the blaster, loaded the boulder with explosives, and BLEW IT UP!
The goal was to break this monster into pieces small enough to collect and eventually fly off the mountain.
Iolite is an incredible purple-blue gemstone with some truly wild optical properties—and this boulder was absolutely loaded with it!
Helicopters, gemstones, dynamite and one VERY big BOOM! This was a mining trip I won't forget.
