My small biogas plant produces 200 liters of pure methane gas every day from just a few kitchen scraps.
Combined with my Stirling engines, I'm using this to become independent from energy providers, even with little sunshine.
Biogas production is simple.
The digester with the right bacteria just needs to be kept at the right temperature and fed regularly.
But generating electricity from this with maximum efficiency is a complex task I've been working on for years.
I want to use biogas – or any other heat source – to power a Stirling engine in a combined heat and power plant.
It is planned to generate electricity to charge the solar battery and thermal energy for heating and hot water.
The external combustion of the Stirling engine allows it to use any heat source.
My Stirling engine with a rhombic drive delivers the required 300 watts of continuous power.
However, it is complex, requires a lot of maintenance, and is therefore too expensive.
The radically simple concept of the thermoacoustic Stirling engine is much better suited for a DIY build and maintenance-free continuous operation.
The engine itself has no moving parts.
That is why I have been experimenting heavily with the thermoacoustic principle for some time now.
An active community has grown on Discord and ownenergy.org.
Together, we are further developing the thermoacoustic Stirling engine as an open-source project.
The main goal is to increase its performance and simplify the design, so that anyone can build the engine without expensive machinery.
Already, almost the entire engine consists of plastic parts that can be made on any 3D printer.
And even the hot parts are currently being redesigned.
This will allow them to be printed in metal or ceramic by a 3D printing service.
The goal, just like the Stirling engine with the rhombic drive, is 300 watts of electrical power.
The thermoacoustic engine should deliver this 24/7 for years with almost no maintenance.
Preparing it for pressurization is the next big goal.
My mechanical Stirling engines also only produce truly useful power when pressurized.
As a rule of thumb, every bar or every 14 psi of pressure acts as a multiplier for the base power of the unpressurized engine.
This means that at our planned 10 bar or 145 psi of pressure, the output will increase tenfold, assuming the heat exchangers are sized correctly.
With this, we could achieve a solid power output even in the current, very early experimental stage.
Many further improvements and developments, like optimizing the thermoacoustic cycle, the heat exchangers, and the Power Extraction Unit, will boost performance even more.
This will bring us closer to our goal: easily building a cheap, reliable power supply ourselves.
