Inside Gemini Robotics: Google DeepMind’s AI for Every Robot

Ten years ago, Google DeepMind’s robotics team believed a single model could learn to go from pixels to motor control. People thought the idea was crazy. Now, many of the same ideas are reshaping general-purpose robotics.

In this episode of Automated, Brian Heater speaks with Carolina Parada, VP and head of robotics at Google DeepMind, about the company’s Gemini Robotics models and its plan to build an AI layer that can work across many different robot bodies, tasks, and environments.

Carolina explains why robots face an even harder challenge than self-driving cars. Roads have lanes, signals, and established rules. General-purpose robots must interact with people, adapt to unfamiliar spaces, and understand how to “read the room.”

She breaks down how Gemini Robotics combines embodied reasoning, vision-language-action models, and whole-body control. She also explains why on-device AI can be more reliable when connectivity is limited, even when a smaller local model is less capable than one running in the cloud.
